How to Manually Upgrade the Firmware of a ThinX Device
Objectives
This document explains how to manually upgrade the firmware of a ThinX based device.
The upgrade can be installed either from a network shared NFS folder or from a USB storage device.
Applicable Software Versions
This document is applicable to a device with the following firmware version:
Chip PC ThinX device firmware, version 1.1.0, build RL0.150802 and above.
General
A ThinX based device can be centrally administrated via the Chip PC Xcalibur Global Management software or it can be manually configured on a local per device basis.
Firmware upgrades can be performed on a ThinX based device, both via Xcalibur Global and manually. The following procedure is applicable for an environment without Xcalibur Global.
The manual upgrade of a ThinX based device can be performed either from a network shared NFS folder or from a USB storage device.
Sections 4, 5 and 6 of this document, describe the procedure for upgrading from NFS. This procedure consists of three steps:
Configuring the server from which the upgrade will be downloaded via NFS.
Configuring the ThinX based device that will be upgraded.
Upgrading the ThinX based device.
Section 7 of this document; describe the procedure for upgrading from a USB storage device.
NFS sharing described in this document refers to a server/desktop which is running a Microsoft operating system. For information on NFS sharing in Linux, please refer to your Linux distribution documentation.
Server Configuration
Install and Configure Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX
This step installs NFS support on the windows server enabling it to share files with a ThinX based device.
The following instructions are based on Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 (henceforth SFU).
Run the SFU setup.
From SFU setup, select the Custom Installation and select the following components:
Server for NFS.
Server for NFS Authentication.
For the rest of the setup use the default settings.
Share the Folder that Contains the Plug-in
This step creates a folder, on the windows server, containing the upgrade files. The folder is shared using NFS thus making it accessible to the ThinX based device.
Create a folder designated to contain the upgrade files (for example: C:\ThinX).
The upgrade files are contained in a folder named after the new firmware version (for example 1.1.0). Copy this upgrade folder (e.g. 1.1.0) to the folder created in step 1.
Right click on the folder created in step 1 and select Properties.
In the folder’s properties select the NFS Sharing tab.
Click Share this folder and in the Share name field type ChipPC.
Select the Allow anonymous access check box and click Apply.
In the folder’s properties select the Security tab.
Add the ANONYMOUS LOGON group to the account list. Leave the default permissions settings (Read & Execute).
Click OK to save the settings and close the dialog.
Run gpedit.msc.
In the Group Policy dialog, open the branch: Local Computer Policy \ Computer Configuration \ Windows Settings \ Security Settings \ Local Policies \ User Rights Assignment.
In the User Rights Assignment folder, modify the setting Bypass Traverse Checking and add the ANONYMOUS LOGON group to the list.
Exit the Group Policy dialog.
ThinX Device Configuration
Select Start > Settings > Device to open the LBT Configuration.
In Device Settings, select Mount Point.
In the Mount Point dialog perform the following tasks:
Select the check box Enable Access to Network Shares.
In the Mount Point field, click Browse.
In the Browse dialog, select File System from the list of Places and double-click on the home folder from the Name list.
In the home folder, click on Create Folder and type Install as the name of the new folder.
In the Install folder, click Select. The path to the Install folder will now appear in the Mount point field.
In the Server Name/Address field, type the name or IP address of the server containing the upgrade files.
In the Path on the Server field, type ChipPC (this is the NFS Share Name of the folder that contains the upgrade file, see section 4.2.5).
The Share Name is case sensitive.
Click Test to verify that the parameters are correct.
Click OK to save the settings and click Yes to restart the device.
Device Upgrade – From a Server
Select Start > Settings > Upgrade to open the Upgrade Settings dialog.
Verify that the option Select files from local or pre-mounted folder is selected.
In the Upgrade Folder field click the browse button to open the dialog Select folder containing upgrade file system.
By default the upgrade settings are configured for use with Xcalibur Global. As a result an error message will appear when opening the browse dialog. Click OK to exit the error message and continue with this procedure.
Select File System from the list of Places and double-click on the home folder from the Name list.
Double-click on the Install folder.
Select the desired upgrade folder and click Open (the folders are named after the firmware version number). The path to the upgrade folder will now appear in the Upgrade folder field.
Click Upgrade to open the Upgrade Firmware dialog.
In the Upgrade Firmware dialog click on Full Download/Upgrade Report to view real time information of the upgrade process.
Click Upgrade to start the upgrade. A Reboot button will appear when the upgrade is completed successfully
Click Reboot to restart the device .
Plug-in Installation – From a USB Storage Device
Select Start > Settings > Upgrade to open the Upgrade Settings dialog.
Verify that the option Select files from local or pre-mounted folder is selected.
In the Upgrade Folder field click the browse button to open the dialog Select folder containing upgrade file system.
By default the upgrade settings are configured for use with Xcalibur Global. As a result an error message will appear when opening the browse dialog. Click OK to exit the error message and continue with this procedure.
Select File System from the list of Places and double-click on the media folder from the Name list.
Double-click on the usb0 folder.
Select the desired upgrade folder and click Open (the folders are named after the firmware version number). The path to the upgrade folder will now appear in the Upgrade folder field.
Click Upgrade to open the Upgrade Firmware dialog.
In the Upgrade Firmware dialog click on Full Download/Upgrade Report to view real time information of the upgrade process.
Click Upgrade to start the upgrade. A Reboot button will appear when the upgrade is completed successfully.
Click Reboot to restart the device.
